Load balancing at Github: Why ldirectord? | Anchor Web Hosting Blog

Some comments on Github’s blog post “How We Made Github Fast” have been asking about why ldirectord was chosen as the load balancer for the new site. Since I made most of the architecture decisions for the Github project, it’s probably easiest if I answer that question directly here, rather than in a comment.

Visual Guide to NoSQL Systems - Nathan Hurst's Blog

There are so many NoSQL systems these days that it's hard to get a quick overview of the major trade-offs involved when evaluating relational and non-relational systems in non-single-server environments. I've developed this visual primer with quite a lot of help (see credits at the end), and it's still a work in progress, so let me know if you see anything misplaced or missing, and I'll fix it.

Terrastore - Scalable, elastic, consistent document store.

Terrastore is a new-born document store which provides advanced scalability and elasticity features without sacrificing consistency.

Here are a few highlights:

  • Ubiquitous: based on the universally supported HTTP protocol.
  • Distributed: nodes can run and live everywhere on your network.
  • Elastic: you can add and remove nodes dynamically to/from your running cluster with no downtime and no changes at all to your configuration.

  • Easy operations: install a fully working cluster in just a few commands and no XML to edit.
  • Features rich: support for push-down predicates, range queries and server-side update functions.

PlentyOfFish Architecture | High Scalability

Update 3: POF now has 200 million images and serves 10,000 images served per second. They'll be moving to a 250,000 IOPS RamSan to handle the load. Also upgraded to a core database machine with 512 GB of RAM, 32 CPU’s, SQLServer 2008 and Windows 2008. Update 2: This seems to be a POF Peer1 love fest infomercial. It's pretty content free, but the production values are high. Lots of quirky sounds and fish swimming on the screen. Update: by Facebook standards Read/WriteWeb says POF is worth a cool one billion dollars. It helps to talk like Dr. Evil when saying it out loud. PlentyOfFish is a hugely popular on-line dating system slammed by over 45 million visitors a month and 30+ million hits a day (500 - 600 pages per second). But that's not the most interesting part of the story. All this is handled by one person, using a handful of servers, working a few hours a day, while making $6 million a year from Google ads. Jealous? I know I am.
